Post-partum thyroiditis (PPT): colour-doppler ultrasonography evaluation

De Remigis P , De Remigis A , Vianale L

Colour-Doppler Ultrasonography (CDU) is applied to the study of many thyroid diseases. In the last one semiquantitative (colour-signal) and quantitative (peak flow velocity at inferior thyroid artery) evaluations are considered. Graves’ disease (GD), amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis were better characterized, even Hashimoto thyroiditis and De Quervain thyroiditis were studied. We described a case of Silent Thyroiditis (ST), showing the possibility to distinguish it from ...

Some authors observed lower thyroid antibodies titers (AbT) in children than in the adult population. The aim of this work was to consider the prevalence of positive results in AbT and elevated TSH levels. We have considered AbT and TSH measurements in a large population. We divided samples in 7 age groups 0–18, 18–20, 20–40, 40–50, 50–60, 60–70 and >70 years old. Cut-off positivity for AbTg and AbTPO was 50 and for TSH was 10 mUI/ml.<p cl...

Autoimmune thyroid disease functional evolution: the role of thyroid volume

De Remigis Pierluigi , Parisi Gaetana , Consiglio Teresa , Ciccarone Elisabetta , De Remigis Alessandra , Vianale Luigi , Frajese Gaetano

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease (ATD) is associated with normal thyroid function (type 1) in most cases with variable incidence of functional evolution toward either hypo (type2, A or B if present or not goiter) or hyperthyroidism (type3).To study the evolution of thyroid function in a longitudinal study, along a scale of six years, in relationship to thyroid volume, 128 subjects (80 females and 48 males), aged from 28 to 78 years, were considered, with the f...

Relationship between cardiac arrhythmias and subclinical hyperthyroidism

De Remigis P , Vianale L , De Remigis A , Sabatini P , Di Girolamo E

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and, in general, cardiac arrhythmias are among the most frequent complications during clinical thyrotoxicosis. However to-day the most frequent conditions of hyperthyroidism are subclinical and more subtle is the relationship between this last condition and cardiac arrhythmias. In order to evaluate this topic, we considered two groups: A) patients admitted into the hospital for AF; B) patients affected by subclinical hyperthyroidi...

Misleading, difficult and lucky path towards a diagnosis in a medullary thyroid carcinoma case

Parisi Gaetana , De Remigis Pierluigi , Vianale Luigi , Ciccarone Elisabetta

MTC represents still a diagnostic challenge in thyroidology. A case is here reported with some misleading signs that was finally solved with a calcitonin assay.A 50 years women was referred for a thyroid nodule incidentally discovered at echography in the right lobe; it appeared round, hypoechoic, without alo sign, well-definite edges, with a diameter of 7 mm. At the first evaluation with echocolordoppler there was no appearance of intralesion vasculariz...

Inverse relationship between seasonal vitamin D variations and thyroid antibodies (TAb) and TSH

De Remigis Alessandra , Tomei Giammarco , Maria Lattanzio Franca , Occhuzzi Umberto , Teresa Natalini Maria , Rapino Daniele

Vitamin D has a role in the pathogenesis of thyroid autoimmunity. There is evidence in humans that serum levels of 1,25(OH) D3 were found to be significantly lower in patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases. We have evaluated all samples performed in the endocrine labs tested for vitamin D, AbTg, Ab-TPO and TSH from 2006 to 2015; 29216 samples for vitamin D and 41014 for TSH, AbTg and TPO were considered. We s...

Detection of pituitary antibodies by immunofluorescence: Methodological approach and results in patients with pituitary diseases

Ricciuti Adriana , De Remigis Alessandra , Landek-Salgado Melissa A. , De Vincentiis Ludovica , Guaraldi Federica , Lupi Isabella , Iwama Shintaro , Wand Gary S. , Salvatori Roberto , Caturegli Patrizio

Pituitary antibodies have been measured mainly to identify patients whose disease is caused or sustained by pituitary-specific autoimmunity. Although reported in over 100 publications, this antibody test has variable results and limited clinical utility. Our goals were to: identify major sources of variability; test them experimentally for establishing an optimized immunofluorescence protocol; assess prevalence and significance of pituitary antibodies in patients with pituitar...
